Understanding How To Get A USA Passport Is Half The Battle

March 4th, 2010

Anyone considering international travel will need a passport. This applies to all U.S. citizens including children and infants. Furthermore, due to new laws, U.S. citizens are now required to carry passports for travel to border countries. The following article will explain how to get a new passport for the first time.

The very first thing that anyone who has never had a passport should do is get online and start reading the travel laws for international travel. Some locations do not require a full passport, and everything will be covered in the State Department passport FAQ. While there are other sites out there that supply information, for something like this, it is best to go right to the source.

Prior to applying for a passport a potential applicant must get passport photos. Passport photos can be taken at any local one-hour photo counter. Normally, the photo-counter will be able to crop your photos to passport size right in the store. Passport photos must be a certain size so that the processing center can easily place them on the passport. The process is normally relatively quick and inexpensive.

After the photos are obtained, check to make sure that all relevant documentation is on hand. Having a valid drivers license or other current government issued ID will be needed along with proof of citizenship. The applicant is also required to make photo copies of all of their documents.

In many cases, a local post office will have a passport processing unit. However, some smaller towns do not have this feature and it will be necessary to travel a bit in order to find one that does offer the passport services. This can be checked easily enough online on the USPS site as they have all passport locations listed.

Anyone that is getting a passport for the first time will actually have to go to a passport office in order to turn in all of their forms. Once everything has been accepted, they can expect to receive a passport in about two months. While this may seem like a long time, it used to be much longer before the new travel laws were put in place.

Applicants that want or need to receive their passports in less than four to six weeks may consider applying for an expedited passport. For an additional sixty dollars, plus shipping fees, expedited passports typically arrive in half the time. There are other options for super-rush passports, but these are typically quite expensive and should be reserved for dire emergencies. Like all aspects of international travel, passport applications require a bit of planning and foresight.

For many people, merely knowing how to get a USA Passport can make the whole experience much easier. Take the time to educate yourself on the ins and outs of the passport process and you will surely find that while it will take some time, the process is actually not that difficult. They key is in making sure all documents are filled out correctly and that the proper documentation is submitted with the pasport application form.

How To Get A New Passport Fast Now!

February 6th, 2010

If you are planning to take a trip outside the country, you will need a passport. This article will give you some details on how to get a passport. It is a formal process and can take some time. Plan ahead so you have your passport well before your scheduled trip abroad.

You can download a passport application from the United States State Department website. You can also obtain one from a local post office. The form you are obtaining is a DS-11. When filling it out, read the directions and follow them properly and exactly. Make certain to have the completed form with you when applying for the passport.

The next step is to gather together any proof of U.S. Citizenship. You need to obtain a certified birth certificate from the municipality in which you were born. The certified birth certificate is the ultimate proof of citizenship.

If you do not have or cannot obtain a certified copy of your birth certificate, it makes it more difficult to apply for a passport. You can obtain a letter of no record from the state you were born in. This is an official document stating that there is no birth certificate on file for you. You could also try to obtain a hospital birth certificate, baptismal record, census records, early school record and any record of early doctor care. Another way is to get an affidavit of birth form from an older blood relative who has personal knowledge of your birth. This should be signed and notarized.

If you were born in a foreign nation to one or two United States parents, you need to get a foreign certificate of birth. It would help to also get proof of U.S. Citizenship for your parents. Your parents can also sign an affidavit which lists the places they have resided for different time periods prior to and after your birth. The next step to take in getting a new passport is to prove your identity. This can be proven by bringing with you an old passport, a valid state drivers license, a government ID card, or a military ID card.

The next procedure is to have two photos taken. The photos should be taken in normal clothing. You should leave your head bare and not wear a hat. Also, uniforms should not be worn. Check the Internet or the yellow pages for merchants that do passport photos. These photos should be full face, 2 x 2 size and identical. Most merchants understand the proper requirements, but make certain you are familiar with the requirements also. You do not want the photos taken improperly as this will lengthen the time it takes to receive your passport.

You should also have your social security number. Find out the application fees and any surcharges so you know in advance the total cost. Once you have all this you should be ready to get a new passport.

There are approximately 7000 passport acceptance facilities across the nation. They include county and municipal offices, county courts, post offices, and some public libraries. Make sure all your paperwork is in order before you go as this will help things move along smoothly. Your new US passport should arrive at your home sometime in two months or less. If you are in a rush, and want to know how to get a new passport, here’s a secret: money! You can shell out $60 or more and the government will send it out as a rush. With your new passport in hand, you will be ready to set sail, or take a plane to new and exciting foreign lands!
