Spotting a Great Ship for Touring Antarctica

May 21st, 2010

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

People need to make up their minds regarding several things before going on an Antarctica cruise. You have to decide which cruise vessel can deliver all you need for the vacation. All Antarctic cruises have advantages and this article explains how they can help decide which suits you best.

You first have to decide if you prefer traveling on a big ship or a small one for the Antarctic cruise. Around 50 to 100 people can ride on a ship that is not so big. Big seagoing vessels can easily hold between 200 and 3000 passengers at anytime. You need to weigh the pros and cons when it comes to choosing a ship for your Antarctic travel. Antarctic Cruising

Most of the games and amusements done on land can also be found on cruise vessels. You will not get bored if you try out everything including dancing and swimming or visiting casinos and gyms. The ship has doctors handy for your medical concerns as well as people to help with your nails and hair before formal banquets. Antarctica cruises on large vessels however generally lack a more personal touch.

Coastlines are usually avoided by larger sea vessels. The tourists carried by the ships along with related environmental laws deter them. Cruise vacations are perfect for people who are not fond of sightseeing. See if there are limits on shore travel by large cruise ships that are specified in certain regulations. Bear in mind that it is only a matter of time before liners have to set sail again.

Small ships will stop more often giving you more flexibility in sightseeing and enjoying yourself overall. They are anchored close to bank which means more time for you to see wildlife and visit distant sites. Fewer individuals are likewise involved here. antarctic cruise ship

Smaller ships are more personal. It is therefore not hard to talk to the other travelers and even the staff. You now have time to spare for other interests including climbing mountains or kayaking. Doctors at small cruise ship clinics charge passengers nothing if they are consulted. The same is available on bigger ships but for a fee.

Always think about safety. Smaller vessels are usually higher ranked when it comes to their ice rating. They are strong enough to withstand punctures and similar accidents on the ice. Your chosen cruise vessel must be ready with the necessary equipment in case tragedy strikes. This is usually governed by prescribed rules so it is not really a problem.

Traveling on smaller vessels can enlighten you in different ways. Your experience is made more colorful by info provided by Antarctica historians about the region. Choose firms that have Antarctica Cruises as its focus. You up your odds of having an enjoyable trip this way. Small and big vessels are not the same and if you know how one is different from the other it will be easier for you to pick the most suitable choice. Traveling to this foreign place must leave you feeling happy and glad you booked the cruise.

Travel In Luxury All The Time With This Contour Pillow

May 20th, 2010

Contour pillow travel choices depend on what you need to achieve by the use of this orthopedic item. Are you simply looking for a way of increasing comfort while traveling, or do you have a health problem that requires a correct body position? One other possible reason for buying a contour pillow travel package is because they are not satisfied with the level of cleanliness of the pillow cases on trains, planes or buses. Last but not least, some claim that they cannot sleep on ’someone else’s pillow’, and therefore they always pack a contour pillow. Travel is a great experience if you cover these minor details that can otherwise easily turn into big inconveniences.

A convenient contour pillow travel design remains the classical memory foam one, as it takes very little space in the luggage thanks to its packing flexibility. There are manifold applications for a contour pillow; travel positions are not always the most comfortable for sleeping, to give just an example, and you often need to place the pillow under the neck, the back or the bottom to increase the comfort level. Pillow cases can help you avoid washing the contour pillow too often, but that is entirely the user’s choice.

Besides the little space required for transportation, the contour pillow travel design includes other very useful features, thus, a constant body temperature is maintained thanks to the heat sensitivity of the material, and an anatomical shape is preserved for maximum efficiency. You can select from all sorts of designs and sizes for a contour pillow; travel issues will be gone particularly when you have kids with you and they need their sleep in the best of conditions.

There are many pillow designs that resemble those of the contour travel variant, but in fact they are used for medical purposes helping to alleviate conditions like sleep apnea or snoring. The efficiency of the travel pillow also depends on the amount of space you have in the car or on the play. Sometimes, the contour pillow travel idea decreases the disadvantages of a too rigid or too upright chair. Whichever be the case, the convenient price and the possibility to pack it easily make such pillows true assets when on the way.

Lone Travellers in Barcelona

May 18th, 2010

To celebrate my final examination during my semester in Scotland at the Glasgow University, I treated myself to eight days in Spain (Barcelona and Madrid, to be precise). I went alone, which I was a tiny bit worried about — I worried about safety, understanding the language and also being alone. Those happened to be viable concerns, although it all happened to be okay, and it aided me feel a whole lot more secure about traveling alone in the future.

Barcelona

I went on Ryanair (a super-discount airline) from Glasgow’s Prestwick Airport to Barcelona — despite the fact that in traditional Ryanair fashion we landed in a secondary airport over an hour’s bus ride from the city. I stayed at the Gothic Point hostel, which I eventually found in the end after heading the wrong way through Barcelona’s Barrio Gotico and finding the cathedral — a nice shock. It was beautiful, dark and elaborate, and unfortunately surrounded with scaffolding. Ah, well. After walking through the nave I travelled back outside and eventually found the hostel, which offered free Internet! I was quite impressed (though understandably there was a bit of delay to use the computers). I used this time to research Barcelona travel information.

I commenced my first entire day of visiting the attractions at Park Guell, created by Barcelona’s celebrated architect Antoni Gaudi. I took the metro to what appeared to be the closest station, but it was still a bit of a long, walk to get there. My next station was Passeig de Gracia, where there were several more famous Gaudi gems. Casa Batllo was too cool for me to try to describe (and also too expensive for me to enter!). Just down the road was La Pedrera, an apartment building with numerous curves, wavy lines, bright colors, oddly shaped windows, etc. After that I continued along the Gaudi trail to la Sagrada Familia, an enormous church whose development has been in progress since about 1883 — and it’s only a little over halfway done. Incredible. I primarily felt a bit robbed when I needed to pay eight euros to get in and then a further two euros just to be carried up one of its towers, but then I figured it was helping to support the building work. Maybe I’ll go back to Barcelona in 30 years or so and see it when it’s finished!

After that I walked to Placa Catalunya, where I strolled down La Rambla, Barcelona’s most renowned street. Lined with trees and shops and street performers of all sorts, it was fun and crowded. La Rambla continues down to the statue of Christopher Columbus and the Port Vell, where I sat and relaxed for a while. Then I made my way back through Barri Gotic toward my hostel, stopping in a few pretty squares — particularly Placa Reial, with palm trees and beautiful historic buildings. I also entered into the cathedral. Barri Gotic is a great area to get lost, with small streets, flowered balconies, wrought-iron railings and traditional street lamps.

The next day I decided to visit Montjuic, where the Olympic Village from the 1992 summer games is located, along with some countryside, a rather unimpressive castle/fortress, and Poble Espanyol, a model Spanish town that had some really pretty buildings and lots of artisan crafts.

I made a pit stop at my hostel to grab an umbrella, even though by that point it was sunny again, of course. Then I continued to the Picasso Museum, which wasn’t as thrilling as I’d wanted. A lot of the things there were very early work. The same can´t be said for the Museum of Erotica, which I visited next! Highlights included a six- or seven-foot wooden phallus, some truly crazy S&M photos, erotic postcards, etc. It was pretty fascinating. I left the museum and walked along the port on my way to Parc de Ciutadella, with its giant fountain in the center. I snapped a quick photo of Barcelona’s version of the Arc de Triomphe before heading back to the hostel to research information about Barcelona airport transportation.

The next day was passed by my flight to Madrid on Spanair (which in the end was faster and not really much costlier than taking a train). It was one of the less peaceful flights I’ve ever been on; there was a crowd of noisy men somewhere towards the back of the plane who cheered when the plane landed.

Explore the Magic of Manrique

May 17th, 2010

Around the world there are lots of wonderful places to enjoy a holiday. But not many of these destinations cannot come close to Lanzarote for cultural attractions. As this small Canary Island located off the African coast is the birthplace of a famous artist called César Manrique. Who created unique cultural attractions and who exerted an enormous influence on the islands development.

Its not unusual for tourist to simply see this stunning island as a sun kissed beach destination but Lanzarote has a rich cultural background as well, and with an excellent choice of Lanzarote holiday villas finding accommodation on the island will not be a chore

Anyone who visits Lanzarote soon encounters the name of César Manrique as his influence is everywhere. Starting right from the airport, where one of his best known giant wind toy sculptures is located, through to their accommodation. As it is thanks to him that all of the apartments and villas in Lanzarote are painted a uniform white colour. Whilst there are no high rise buildings or ad billboards blotting the landscape.

Manrique was born in 1919 in the capital city of Arrecife and developed a life long love affair with Lanzarote from a very young age. His family owned a summer house in the beach resort of Famara, which is located in then north of the island and which is noted for its natural beauty. And here the young Manrique would gaze at the reflection of the huge Famara massif cliff range in the ebbing surf and rock pools.

The young Manrique went on to study art in Madrid, against his parent’s wishes, before becoming involved with the Spanish surrealist movement in the 1950´s. A brave move in Franco´s Spain at the time. Before heading off to New York under the patronage of the Rockefellers to study and exhibit there. Where he rubbed shoulders with contemporaries such as Andy Warhol.

Manrique returned home as a seasoned traveller with a passion for both art and architecture and was well aware of the devastion that modern building could bring so he championed the fusion of art, architecture and tourism which is appreciated by visitors and locals alike even though he is no longer with us.

Further details about available Lanzarote self catering apartments can be found on the Lanzarote1.com website.

The Volcanic Destination Of Lanzarote

May 16th, 2010

There are numerous holiday destinations around the world that were once borne from volcanic eruptions many of which are now dormant, but many more are still fairly active for example New Zealand or even Hawaii. But this fact hasn’t stopped the onslaught of tourism around the world or even in Europe for that matter for example Lanzarote.

Lanzarote is an island that has been totally transformed by volcanic activity. Large scale eruptions rocked the island during the 1730s and went on for six years. Followed up by a further encore in 1824. As a result around 200km square of the islands surface area is now a lunar like lava scape. A surreal and eerie site that has caught the eye of numerous film makers over the years.

The Islands volcanic past does not stop millions of holidaymakers flocking to the Island year after Year though.

Lanzarote Holiday Villas And Accommodation, There is an excellent choice of accommodation on the island ranging from self catering apartments for the budget concious, through to hotels and private villas. The biggest question on most peoples lips however is where to stay.

Visitors can take their choice of three main holiday destinations. In winter villas in Playa Blanca tend to attract lots of bookings, as this part of the island enjoys a more clement climate during December and January. Whilst villas in Puerto del Carmen are more popular with tourists in search of decent nightlife, as there is a real abundance of clubs and bars here in Lanzarote´s largest resort.

Costa Teguise is also one of the islands popular resorts and well worth looking into.

As well as a reliable tourist industry and great weather Lanzarote also offers holidaymakers plenty of attractions and activities. Factors which have helped to maintain the island’s ongoing popularity. These include an array of natural wonders, such as the verdant Valley of 1000 Palms in the north of the island. And the number one tourist attraction of the Timanfaya Volcano Park – where visitors can gaze in awe at over 300 now dormant peaks. There are also close to 100 beaches to explore along with some very pretty little villages such as Haria and Yaiza.

Where To Find The Best Cheap Travel Packages

May 12th, 2010

Prices for flights and hotel bookings vary a lot from one period of the year to another, and in this ultra fast moving world of traveling, getting the best tips equals maximum profit for businesses and rewarding alternatives for holiday makers. Cheap travel packages are a necessity given the need to attract customers, and this campaign development does not remain within the boundaries of travel agencies, as it greatly touches on the policies of hotels and touristic resorts too. Sometimes the prices increase without any apparent reason, but keep in mind that the higher the demand for a certain destination, the bigger the prices will get.

If the plane tickets are not chosen carefully, they could cost a fortune even if you think you are negotiating for cheap travel packages. Those tourists whoprefer direct routes should remember that airfares vary according to some “rules” the common user remains a stranger to. Hence, a direct route is much more expensive than alternate or combined flights. Before paying for an international flight, you may be interested in checking whether you don’t pay less for getting a domestic one in the same direction, first. Some agencies take into consideration such elements when creating cheap travel packages, but others take the directest flight to the destination as a standard criterion.

Another way to keep the cheap travel packages cheap all the way is never to overlook important details like the travel food. Many restaurants in various parts of the world make huge profits on the account of tourists without peoples realizing it, therefore, it is time tourists started focusing more on local food they could enjoy during outings for example. This doesn’t mean that you need to spend any time in the kitchen while on holiday, but you should inquire about the best food in town and the fairest prices. For local specialties, costs are a lot smaller and the food is absolutely great!

Another way of getting really cheap travel packages is flexibility. Let’s say that you choose to travel to South America. If you ask a travel agency for a holiday to Rio de Janeiro, you will notice that this is more expensive than a random touristic destination in Brazil. Some less known and little crowded resorts could prove more rewarding than a very popular but rather luxurious one. Nevertheless, it all depends on what you expect from the cheap travel packages, and what idea of a holiday you have in mind. Plenty of details are abundant on the Internet and you can learn loads of useful things to help you maximize the money efficiency and the pleasure of the vacation.

Searching For The Best AAA Travel Agencies

A Trip To Antarctica

May 7th, 2010

Tiny penguins who are looking dapper and formal waddle about their land, sliding around their slippery, muddy, rocky rookeries in numbers that reach in the thousands.

The penguins vigilantly care for their nests, and the chicks that may be in them, by chasing away nosey neighbors, skuas and seals. When not doing this, they spend their time fixing their feathers. The little brown balls of fluff constantly chatter at their parents, demanding food.Penguins parents were designed to feed. When the mother gets back from feeding in the ocean, they parents perform a ritual dance of bows and pecks and then the father takes his turn feeding. Contact this website if you require information on antarctica travel packages.

Penguins aren’t nearly as adorable as people usually believe. They smell bad, they’re loud, and they can be very pushy.Nevertheless, people still travel to Antarctica just for the chance to be close to these flightless birds.

There’s more to Antarctica than just penguins, though.A gorgeous background of sea and landscapes hosts animals like whales, dolphins and seals, as well as seabirds like albatross. You’ll see glaciers which point sharply upwards, mimicking the grand cathedrals found in Europe. There is also the rush you can get from visiting a place that only a handful of people have ever been before. Antarctica is truly this planet’s last frontier.

Getting to the continent is a major section of the adventure. You can expect the trip to be exciting, as well as expensive. If leaving from the United States, the air travel just to get to a southern port alone, like Ushuaia, Argentina, is going to take at least 20 hours. You could also choose to fly into Punta Arenas, Chile or Cape Town, South Africa. Christchurch, New Zealand is another point at which you could then catch an ice-rated expedition cruise ship.Ships remain the only way to reach the continent, and it takes many days of extremely rough seas.Further information on antarctica vacation can be found there.

Bigger than the United Statesand Mexico together, the continent of Antarctica is a land which is surrounded by ice shelves that are larger in area than North America, and it provides the Earth with over 70% of the fresh water of the entire planet. You can take a cruise from ten to twenty-eight days in length.Ships usually host somewhere between 75 and 200 passengers. These ships also tend to be more informal than the usual cruises that travel the Mediterranean or Caribbean. You?ll be regaled by lectures and slideshows of Antarctica instead of lured to the casino.

Once you are close enough to the continent, the ships will provide rafts that take the passengers to land that is close to penguin rookeries or scientific research stations where you can learn more about what the scientists are studying in the Antarctic.

Only five countries have research facilities on the continent. They are the original countries who participated in signing the international agreement on Antarctica. This makes the continent a haven for scientific study by requiring it stay commerce, nuclear and border ?free.

Such tourism strikes various individuals as a big mistake. One option of tourism was stopped in 1979 with the crash of a DC-10. All 257 people on board lost their lives, and no more flyovers were allowed.Environmentalists worry that tons of tourists will endanger Antarctica?s fragile ecosystem. They fear ski-wielding tourists visiting in droves to see the wildlife.Environmentalists, politicians, and scientists all debate Antarctic tourism. They all want to keep Antarctica safe. The second argument states that most tourists who have seen Antarctica first hand come out with a new attitude on protecting the environment.

Currently, Antarctic tourists are not regulated.Eco-tourism?s basic ideas do hold true for those visiting Antarctica.Don’t bother any native elements, only take photos, and don’t leave anything behind but footprints. You should choose clothes that can be layered.Although most of the ships will give you down filled parka jackets, you are going to have to bring your own waterproof boots and plenty of socks. Make sure you have your camera. Also make sure you?ve packed your sunglasses and strong sunscreen. You can?t run to the corner convenience store in Antarctica.
