Mud And Rocks Of Antarctica To Treasure Forever

An untrained eye would see the contents of the bags and plastic vials as useless waste or everyday mud and rocks even. Surely able to make the scientists as busy as can be are these samples obtained from the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica. A college senior said that mud can tell you a lot. This college senior was one of a handful of students and faculty from one college and one university who recently spent a month in Antarctica on an expedition funded by the National Science Foundation. Such schools have already taken part in other research cruises in the past.

For the group, a research vessel was used and they departed from Punta Arenas Chile in early February. The unchartered territory of the Larsen Ice Shelf was their first destination located on the east of the Antarctic Peninsula. It has been said that they were the first explorers to reach that place. There was no rapid motion for the boat as they used sonar for the measurement of the ocean’s depth. From the deck students and other researchers collected water and sediment samples and gathered video footage. These are samples which may take a long period of time to analyze. You will find that further information on antarctic travel is on that site.

In an effort to see how it is related to the situation of global warming today, the mud will be studied considering its composition and water content. Trips like this one are once in a lifetime opportunities for the student. Such a trip offers a face to face encounter with life, according to a student. The student is a native of Scotland who plans to attend graduate school taking up global warming. The school of Oceanography in a university will be expecting a student next year who says that she does not mind spending the rest of her life on a ship.

Even with the extreme weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere, these people coped. Upstate New York was the same way. They found it harder than cold days to have the sun rising and setting at 430 am and 930 pm. It was so bright even looking out the window was kind of painful. No matter how limited civilization was, science happened on a daily basis. If you were a student, a typical shift would be midnight to noon or vice versa. A group lounge was where students watched movies when they were not working, some slept on the bunk beds too.

This did not defeat the rules students needed to follow. Should something serious occur, a senior must be told. Other than go to a newly found surface volcano, a senior student needed to go to an emperor penguin as well. For the Dryden native, this was actually a pleasing experience. Everything must be experienced. She said one of the best days of her life was when members of the expedition went ashore on Vega Island. To be in a place where only 10 other people have been to is rather remarkable, she says. To get a better understanding of antarctica holiday, visit their website.

Students who participated missed five weeks of classes. Their busy schedules on board, and the environmental hazards that came along with their floating classroom, made it difficult to get schoolwork done. When their ship is always on the go they face more difficulty. Communication was rather minimal with two emails daily. The students and faculty grew close to one another because of the common living spaces and the lack of distractions. Escape was too far to reach as mentioned by a student.Everything from the desolated area to the extreme environment will really make people close.

For the customs officials the explanatory documents for the unique cargo were prepared as they carried their samples back to the United States in coolers. Other than five rolls of film one student also carried 323 digital pictures. Another student, who went on the expedition last year as well, said she spent more time embracing her surroundings. When you want to capture a moment you should experience it. On occasion, it is a better option to understand your environment.

Animals Everywhere In Antarctica

September 1st, 2010

You’d be surprised that the farthest southern living animal is actually a pink mite. This tiny creature is only 1/100th of an inch long. Looking very similar to a spider, it dines on algae and fungi. Imagine the delight a scientist from Hawaii felt when he found the pink mite living a mere 309 miles from the South Pole. A mere 266 miles from that same pole, lichens were discovered, easily the southernmost living thing ever to be discovered.

Some written reports claim that only insects and their kin can live year round on Antarctica. Although your eye can’t see them, around 56 species of arthropods have been found there. At about the same size as a horsefly, a wingless fly is the biggest. When the temperature finally gets to 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the melting point of water, the dormant animals are reactivated. You will find info on Antarctic cruises by visiting that site.

The blue whale lives in the waters around Antarctica, along with many other creatures. In fact, the waters are rippling with a variety of life. A view into life in the Antarctic waters was the goal of scientists who used a steel capsule to peer into the lives of the marine animals. The windows through which the men peeked out were small, and it was so small that turns were taken to occupy it.They even included a hydrophone so that they could hear what was going on in the water around them.

Pulling its thirty foot tentacles behind it, a jelly fish passed the windows. The scientists didn’t see many other fish. The chamber did attract the attention of local seals, who surfaced at a nearby ice hole and looked at the chamber itself. The hydrophone gave scientists that chance to hear the seals; they chirped, whistled, buzzed and beeped. They certainly made a lot of noise. One scientist called it an underwater racket he’d never heard prior to then.

These noises help the Weddell seals to navigate and communicate. The deep dark waters of the Antarctic may cause the Weddell seals to rely on sonar to find food and places to surface for air. These sounds are completely checked out. Because they are outside our hearing range, some of the sounds can’t be detected by humans. If you are in search of info don’t forget to view this resource Antarctic cruise ship.

No one knows exactly how they make the sounds. Both their nostrils and mouths are tightly closed when in the water. Weddell seals have been recorded diving up to 1500 feet in depth. This is the farthest any mammal has ever been officially recorded as diving. Their lung capacity is also great, one seal waiting a half hour before needing to emerge from the water.A zoologist was able to collect a sample of mother’s milk from a Weddell seal. Compared to human milk, there’s more fat in the milk of a seal, which makes sense given their ability to gain weight.Newborn seals can multiply their weight five times in just six weeks.

The Antarctic seas have been traversed time and time again by wetsuited scientists.Colorful seaweeds, including red ones, filled the ocean’s bottom. Five foot long worms, four foot sponges and big red and white starfish were also there.

Off The Beaten Track in Lanzarote

August 30th, 2010

Lanzarote is one of the seven Canary Islands that are probably best known as a package holiday hot spot. But these islands still attract plenty of more independent travellers too, as a result of the introduction of low cost flights to Lanzarote courtesy of budget operators such as easyjet and Monarch. And now it is it possible to fly from British airports to the island from as little as €100 return.

More independent travellers means more demand for self catering accommodation. And this has resulted in the growth of the private rental sector. With thousands of Lanzarote holiday villas and apartments now available. And despite the fact that there are now plenty of attractive hotels and fincas in the countryside most visitors from the UK still prefer to book something in one of the larger resorts. With villas in Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen in great demand especially during the peak holiday periods.

Just enter Lanzarote holiday villas and accommodation to find the ideal holiday accommodation suitable for singles or even large family groups

Arguably, Lanzarote´s most famous talking point is its 300 plus volcanoes. Which were created by seismic activity during the 18th century that went on for over six years. As a result the interior of the island today looks like the moon – with lots of lava fields and spent peaks. With little in the way of flora and fauna able to grow or survive here. So it comes as something of a surprise to discover that this arid island can sustain its own wood.

El Bosque is located in the North of the island and is such as well kept secret that it isn’t even signposted and doesn’t appear on many maps. However this is a hugely popular spot with the locals, many of whom head here on holidays and weekends to enjoy a BBQ whilst drinking in the fabulous views down to the bay of Famara below.

The Demand For Holiday Homes In Devon Will Rocket Next season

August 29th, 2010

With the current VAT raise announcement from the crisis budget in the united kingdom this week, we must ask how it will affect travel and leisure in the UK, equally in the primary streets of London and in the many UK seashore areas round the country.

Whilst the Tax raise might put off numerous incoming travellers due to the increased costs involved in travelling to Great Britain, it may additionally result in numerous British staying in the united kingdom in an attempt to conserve some money, rather than flying around the world.

Internet search engine trends could be the very first to recognise this particular change of behaviour, as people will be trying to find Holiday Homes in Devon, rather than Disneyland deals.

A First Grade Class Enjoys Antarctica On The Web

August 28th, 2010

One boy really loves penguins other than playing outside or with Legos not to mention messing around on the computer . A chance to see his beloved birds in the wild will be a possibility for this first grader early next month and he will see them waddle across the ice and feed their newly hatched chicks in Antarctica . Accompanying him and his parents to a trip to the Antarctic Peninsula is an internationally known explorer and filmmaker .

For most children his age, visiting this continent is a rather rare opportunity . Because of such an exciting trip, his friends are also in celebratory mode . Their behavior can be justified by the fact that his classmates are coming too . It will be expensive to bring them all along so what will be done is that they will have an Internet linkup . For this trip, the live video coverage will be accessible to students from all over . Learn about Antarctic Cruising Tours.

Question and answer forums will be available live from the site through the pilot youth program . To increase learning from this experience, teachers will be coming up with grade level activities that will build on the boy’s dispatches . Respectively working on the weather, geology, and forces in motion are the first, fourth, and fifth graders .

This surely represents family adventure . To be the voice of reason is why she will join the trip and the mother said this after mentioning how much the boy loves nature . As said by the boy, if you have a little motivation your dreams can easily be fulfilled .

A webcast is nothing new in this time and age . This is an explorer who is the first to ice bike 250 miles across Antarctica and the first American to ski to the South Pole but this interactive experience with kids will also be a first . He has been there over a dozen times since 1999 but the activities were mostly for adults including science and extreme skiing . With every trip that he took, he acquired much knowledge that he wanted to share with the children who were the best recipients . The kids’ program was decided upon less than a year ago . As a person looking for Antarctica Holiday you should visit that site.

When it comes to the timing, the trip is lucky enough to have been decided upon just when the March of the Penguins movie has caused a stir . Maybe destiny brought the explorer and the boy’s mother together . About a year ago, the boy’s mom, who attended a local university with the explorer but had since lost touch, contacted the 42 year old explorer via his Web site after hearing about it from a mutual friend .

It was in Buenos Aires, Argentina where the boy made his first live dispatch before the 14 day expedition headed to the south . They and travelers originating from Toronto boarded a 100 passenger cruise ship that went through the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Peninsula . It was during the 600 mile, 30 hour ride that they encountered the most danger considering how it involved harsh sea weather .

On the plus side, the Drake Passage offers frequent sightings of whales, dolphins and elephant seals . Ice usually covers the beaches and bays at other times and they will be visiting these by using rubber boats after they arrive at the peninsula . They will be visiting scientific research stations and penguin rookeries as well . What the explorer knows about is the location of a colony of emperor penguins, the largest from 17 species in Antarctica and the ones made popular by the March of the Penguins.

Antarctica Sketched On Paper

August 28th, 2010

The difficulties of reaching Antarctica, along with all the other unknown factors the continent holds, came to the world’s attention thanks to an American explorer. You can experience the world’s largest ice mass when visiting Antarctica. It nearly covers the continent’s five million square acres. There are scientists who have calculated that this ice sheet is 2,000 feet in thickness, but others feel number to be insufficient. Everything is covered in ice except the coastal land strips and the tallest mountain peaks.

Traveling through valleys, the ice moves as a giant glacier toward the sea. If you are seeking the South Pole, you’ll need to visit the central plateau. This impressive land feature stretches some eight to ten thousand feet above sea level. Contact this website if you require information on antarctica trips.

The seas and other land areas north of Antarctica have served to provide their names for this continent which has four quadrants. The African,, Pacific and American quadrants are what they’ve been called. No one has explored the coastlines of the Pacific and African quadrants. A very small area of the American quadrant coastline has been really investigated; the quadrant is far better known. It contains the Ross Sea sector.

Queen Mary Land and the Ross Sea border the quadrant on the East and West sides, respectively. It houses South Victoria Land, Oates Land, King George V Land, Adelle Land and Wilkes Land.Ross Sea’s western band is a mountainous region, with peaks jutting up from the Ross Barrier, which is an expansive swath of ice which covers a roughly 160,000 square mile span.

Near a natural harbor called the Bay of Whales, also on the barrier, the explorer set up base camp.At the extreme western end of the barrier, two volcanoes fill Ross Island. They are called Mount Erebus and Mount Terror. The barrier extends for a length in excess of 400 miles, from the Ross Sea to King Edward VII Land. At 400 miles in width, it stretches from the sea to the polar route mountains.Go to this site for further information on antarctica trip.

Shelf ice can only be found in Antarctica, and the barrier is the largest available example. Glaciers coming from the mountains met the Ross Sea and this created the barrier. The largest glacier is over one hundred miles long of the many glaciers which reach down from the vast interior and discharge their ice into the Ross Sea. It is unknown if the Barrier is floating or sits on the bottom of the ocean.

The Ross Sea borders the Pacific Quadrant, as well.It is near here that fantastic rock outcroppings can be seen in King Edward VII land. The adventurer made his way to this sector on an initial expanded flight from the Bay of Whales, and it was then that he observed the Scott Nunataks and the Alexandra Mountains. In later flights he was able to find fourteen uncharted mountain peaks, one new island and a ton of land that is begging to be explored. Later flights of his were able to gather great quantities of data about Antarctica, perhaps even making it possible for map makers to finally draw the coast of the Pacific quadrant.

A number of adventurers have become interested in the American quadrant’s Weddell sea area indentation which includes Coats Land, Graham Land and Charcot Land. After a flight, an explorer discovered Graham Land isn’t actually part of the continent. It is a separate island. Those involved in geography wonder if the continent should be divided. The American quadrant’s Weddell Sea is virtually opposite the quadrant’s Ross Sea.

Scientific research and field study are two of the disciplines which are available on an unlimited basis in Antarctica. Geographers want to finish mapping the coastline. Then they can finalize the mountain ranges and polar plateau.

There is a need for further examination of the glaciology of the Antarctic continent, the study of outcroppings of rock, and glacial moraines which are encased in the ice covered land which geologist are currently studying.

Tour The Real Lanzarote

August 28th, 2010

Lanzarote has been welcoming foreign tourists ever since the package holiday industry first started up in the early 1970´s. Proving popular thanks to a classic combination of breathtaking beaches and incredible weather. However Lanzarote can offer visitors much more than just sand and sun alone. Thanks to the fact that development here is carefully controlled – leaving the bulk of the island largely untouched.

Like some of the other Canary Islands there is a north-south divide in evidence on Lanzarote. With the south home to the main tourist resorts whilst the north is more the preserve of the locals. A bi-product in part of the weather – as even on a small island such as Lanzarote there is a considerable difference in temperatures and climate conditions between the north and south.

The last decade has seen more independent travellers visiting the island alongside package holidaymakers. Thanks to the fact that flights and accommodation can now easily be booked direct online, creating a demand for rental properties – such as Lanzarote holiday villas and apartments. Which are now booked by visitors from countries such as the UK and Eire in preference to hotels and all inclusive holidays. Especially in the islands largest resort – where many holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen are often booked up throughout the year.Details about holiday villas in Playa Blanca is available here

Outside the three resorts is an island that is full of hidden delights. Some of which don’t even appear on local maps. So it really pays to book a rental vehicle and take some tie to tour around. With the north home to the real authentic heart of Lanzarote.

To connect with the real Lanzarote just drive to the north of Lanzarote and stroll around the incredibly picturesque village of Haria. Which also plays host to a great market every Saturday morning. Haria has been described as the prettiest village on the island – if not the world. And whilst the former is true the latter is something of an exaggeration. Although Haria is a real gem as it is very green and verdant whilst the rest of Lanzarote is arid and dry. A phenomenon that is not all down to Mother Nature as locals here continue to follow a tradition of planting a Canarian palm for every newborn baby in the village. No wonder it has long been described as the Valley of 1000 Palms!

Haria is just a ten minute drive from the seaside village of Arrieta and it´s delightful beach, Playa La Garita. Which is the last undeveloped stretch of sand on Lanzarote´s south eastern coastline. Head here for a great lunch in one of the restaurants located right on the beach.

Among the various kinds of backpacks available, the most interesting ones are the Hello Kitty Backpacks. Hello Kitty is a cartoon character created in 1974; this character is a white kitty that does not have a mouth and is always in her world filled with dreams and fantasies. This cartoon character is associated with the very well-known slogan “Be Yourself”. Although since the mid 1970’s Sanrio was the only company producing Hello Kitty products, it was only in the late 1980’s that its products became popular on the international scale.

You can find Hello Kitty Backpacks with many attractive designs and colors. The most widely sold out Hello Kitty products in the market include the

Large 16″ pink backpacks with a cute look

Cute Large 16″ Hello Kitty Backpack - with bottle space

Hello Kitty rolling backpack for carrying luggage

Full-sized Hello Kitty backpack as school bags

Hello Kitty Pink Purple Backpack

One of the types of backpacks also comes with storage compartments on both sides where children can keep their water bottles. Many people also use the Hello Kitty rolling backpack that is large in size with rolling wheels so that people can carry their luggage easily while travelling.

The Full sized school bag is perfect for girls carrying it for high school because it has four loaded compartments. The one which is a hit among the kids is the Plush Figure Backpack mainly because the shape of the backpack itself is like Hello Kitty. Trip travel insurance will provide reimbursements for approximately 70% of your cancellation fees. Plans may also provide 24 hour support in case of a medical crisis requiring a hospital stay or maybe a medical evacuation so you can get you home or to a better hospital or medical facility.

Regardless of whether you do buy trip insurance there are actually a number of safety travel ideas to bear in mind while overseas. For example, always keep some money or important paperwork, like passports or emergency phone numbers, secure in a hidden money belt. A lot of urban centers are recognized for their cunning pickpockets. Sometimes they travel in twos in which one will distract you, when the other may make off with your wallet, purse or backpack.

An additional idea to insure a relaxing journey is to get as in good health as possible. You may not desire to take on a extended airline flight in case you are struggling with a sinus illness or other health problem either. Verify exactly what vaccinations or immunizations are necessary for the nation you may be going to.

Some of us become very stressed when journeying. We fret about everything from whether we forgot our toothbrush to the possibility of some form of unforeseen emergency situation. A way to alleviate a lot of stress is to arrive at the train station, airport or bus depot in plenty of time. This will give you a lot of time to check in and undergo any type of safety measures that may be in place.

In case you have problems with some form of chronic illness or perhaps have a phobia of flying, consult your doctor regarding prescription medication that may cause you to more comfortable. You should be as tension free, healthy and strong as possible to insure a satisfying family vacation.

Be dressed in clothing that are comfortable and shoes that can be slipped off simply when under-going airport security. Layer your clothing in order that should you become too warm you can take off a sweatshirt or light coat. Likewise carry a little something to slip on should you become cool during the flight, train ride or on the bus.

Trip insurance can offer you assistance with issues like medical evacuation, lost baggage or ticket replacement but not with common sense issues of safety. Become a sensible and advised tourist and prepare to properly cover you and your family with a good insurance plan for traveling peace of mind.

Witnessing Unusual Events In Antarctica Aboard A Cruise Ship

August 26th, 2010

I wait for a break in the raging waves before doing my thing after stepping down the gangway of the cruise ship with care. Taking one fast stride, I was seated in my rubber boat. Within minutes, our small group of tourists bounces by floating chunks of strikingly blue ice and a napping seal. I take the cue as my boat stopped along a rocky beach, putting my legs right above the zodiac to get to the Antarctic Peninsula’s northern area.

My senses were overwhelmed by a pungent smell and an extraordinary sight as I walked along the beach, ridden with blocks of ice. In front and around me, hundreds of adelie penguins waddled. As far as what I could see, their numbers rose up a craggy slope. It is such a thrill to finally land in the remotest among all the continents and through infamously rough seas, we cruised from Ushuaia Argentina and I can certainly say that this is a spectacular journey already. This crystalline wilderness situated at the Earth’s bottom has now increasingly become attractive to tourists worldwide. Further information on Antarctica cruise ship can be found there.

Just last year, 26,000 visitors poured in and the number rises each year. Patterns of the cold blue are broken off seemingly, by sneaky penguin lectures. The weather is extremely pleasant during the Decembers of the austral summer even as this continent is known to be the world’s coldest. Achieving 40s on the peninsula, there can be times when temperatures grow extremely freezing. Trips usually run from November to March.

This 11 day adventure is mostly spent in rough waters, its 100 meter ship body strengthened to traverse icy waters and loaded most of the time with a hundred passengers or more. The vessel is not so fancy, but it is very comfortable. Many passengers go to its library, auditorium and even their bar and lounge. On board tiny yachts, many people travel to Antarctica. We bid the port farewell come Friday night. The next day, is about seeing the breathtaking birds in their flight such as the wandering albatrosses, along with the other birds found in the southern seas traveling around.

As they sail through the seas, the tour guides present creative ways to keep passengers excited such as experts led lectures about geology, birds, marine science, history and even creative visual arts that enable them to paint and draw icebergs and sneaky penguins. Lectures on global warming are surprisingly absent on this trip, though, but the topic is usually discussed. You can get resources on Recommended Antarctica Cruises by visiting this site.

Continental landings and nearby island action comprised most of the highlights of the trip. Listening to the stentorian cracking boom of a calving iceberg and watching an avalanche occur from a distance are truly once in a life time experiences. Still, there is plenty to see from the ship’s decks. This season, darkness occupies shorter hours so many tourists revel in their sightseeing spree.

It would be more enjoyable to stay on deck, beholding the wind carved icebergs shimmering white or blue as they float past your cruise ship as long as you are dressed appropriately to keep from the discomfort and risks that come from strong winds. We marveled as we passed through white landscapes of high mountains with hanging glaciers like jewels. Many people can see whales rise up during some times. Glorious red and orange paint the skies during a nice long sunset.

Back on the ship, we get some alarming news that one of the older passengers is very sick and will need to be evacuated. This means we will make a long detour overnight and go back to the South Shetland Islands to get to an airstrip. Medical evacuation insurance has now become a necessity before embarking on a trip due to evacuations like this one which costs up to tens of thousands of dollars or oftentimes, even more.

Once the passenger was evacuated to Chile, we trooped to where the newly Gentoo penguin chicks were fed by their parents, in Ardley Island. Delicately, a snack of krill is regurgitated by the mother penguin after putting the chick’s head in its own mouth, thus a strand of slime between the two beaks.
